How Much, Is Too Much?

Dont Over Think It

When I first started thinking about blogging for my graphic design website, I kept asking myself two big questions: What should the hero image be? and How much should I write? Honestly, I wasn’t sure where to start. Then it hit me—this would be my first post. I realized many designers and creatives probably share this concern, and that’s why I wanted to dive into the idea of how much is too much?

Let’s take a page from one of the most well-known artists in history, Pablo Picasso, who said, "Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working." This applies not just to painting or design but to writing as well. You’ll never have the perfect idea before you begin—it evolves as you work. Don’t be afraid to let all your ideas out and shape them as you go. Overthinking often stifles creativity.

Quantity vs. Quality

In blogging, I’ve learned that more isn’t always better. You might feel tempted to write as much as possible to show off your knowledge or fill space, but that’s not the goal. Your readers want something valuable that sticks with them—whether 500 words or 1,500. The length of your post matters less than its clarity and impact.

Think about this: When someone visits your blog, they’re likely searching for solutions or inspiration. You don’t need to overwhelm them with unnecessary information. Instead, focus on giving them the best information. Your blog post should feel like a conversation—a clear, engaging message that answers their questions without dragging on.

Starting with Ideas

When approaching any creative project, whether a blog post or a graphic design piece, I always remind myself not to get caught up in the details immediately. Let the ideas flow, no matter how messy or disorganized. I sketch out the broad strokes first, then go back and refine. Writing works the same way.

Start by throwing all your thoughts on the page—don’t worry about perfect structure or flow. This process is often referred to as a “brain dump.” Get all your ideas out; then you can go back and sift through them. The gems will reveal themselves as you start editing and revising.

For your blog, this might mean writing down every point, example, or insight you have about the topic. Once it’s all there, you’ll start seeing a natural flow emerge. What you keep will guide your post, and what you trim down will sharpen it.

Finding the Balance

So, how much is too much? The truth is, there’s no magic number. Whether writing a blog post or designing a visual, the answer is always about balance. You are finding the sweet spot where your content feels complete without being overwhelming. For blogs, aim to cover your topic thoroughly, but don’t pad it with filler. Less is often more in design—a clean, focused design speaks volumes.

If you’re worried about writing too much, here’s the trick: Start with everything, and then trim. If you’re worried about writing too little, ask yourself if you’ve answered your reader’s most important questions. If you have, you’re good to go.

Conclusion

Blogging—like design—is about communication. You want to convey an idea clearly and concisely without losing your audience. When I approach any creative project, whether writing or designing, I remind myself to trust the process. Throw all your ideas on the page, let them flow, and then carve out the chosen path.
